On November 05, 2023, the Centre of Excellence for Sickle Cell Research and Training (CESRTA) at the University of Abuja invited all students of the university to participate in a competition to create awareness materials in the form of jingles or skits, aimed at promoting the ongoing free newborn screening for sickle cell disease across various Primary Health Centres in the Federal Capital Territory.
Despite the low turnout, the competition provided a valuable platform for those who participated. The CESRTA judging committee (composed of Dr Hezekiah Isah, Nr Rukkayat Ibrahim and Dr Kelechi Obi-Nwaigwe) is pleased to announce the winners of the competition. Anthony C. Ndubisi, a 600-level Medicine and Surgery student, secured first place in the Jingles category and Annette Yakubu, a 300-level student from the Medicine and Surgery department, won the Video category.
Both winners were honoured with a monetary reward on September 2,2024. In addition to this, they will have the opportunity to work with CESRTA to improve the content of the jingle and video for dissemination to the public as part of the awareness campaign on newborn for screening sickle cell disease.
