D43 SPARC-TRAIN Implementation Science Training: Cohort 2 Highlights

The D43 SPARC-TRAIN Implementation Science Training equips researchers with the skills to address global health challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Cohort 2 successfully utilized a hybrid model, bridging the gap between theoretical implementation science and practical, real-world application.

Program Overview

The training was structured into two intensive modules, narrowing a competitive field of 30 initial enrollees down to 17 successful finalists who completed both phases.

  • Module 1: Virtual Foundations (Nov 2025 – Jan 2026): A 10-week course introducing core implementation science principles, trial designs, evaluation strategies, and mHealth applications. To advance, participants completed a critical appraisal of a published research article, evaluating its design, cultural competency, and scalability.
  • Module 2: In-Person Application (Mar 2026): A two-day intensive workshop hosted at the University of Abuja. Finalists applied major frameworks—such as CFIR, RE-AIM, and EPIS—to real-world global health challenges through interactive seminars, case-based learning, and peer presentations.

Real-World Application: Sickle Cell Disease

A primary focus of the in-person module was tackling noncommunicable diseases and maternal health challenges, with a special emphasis on sickle cell disease. Through hands-on assignments, participants:

  • Developed targeted implementation research questions.
  • Selected and justified evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to improve sickle cell care.
  • Analyzed key implementation outcomes, including feasibility, acceptability, appropriateness, and cost.
  • Presented their frameworks to receive constructive, expert feedback.

 

Looking Ahead: Participants are now expanding their proposed studies into full manuscripts for publication. This will directly contribute to the growing body of research on evidence-based interventions for sickle cell disease.

By empowering participants with the tools to design, implement, and evaluate health interventions, the D43 SPARC-TRAIN program has successfully:

  • Strengthened local capacity for implementation science research.
  • Enhanced skills in critical thinking, trial design, and framework application.
  • Promoted the sustainable adoption of evidence-based practices in resource-limited settings.
  • Fostered a highly collaborative network of dedicated global health researchers.
