WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY CELEBRATION 2023

THEME:
“The Role of Stakeholders in the Management of Sickle Cell Disease”

INTRODUCTION:

World Sickle Cell Day is observed annually on June 19th to raise awareness about Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and promote the importance of its management. In 2023, the Centre of Excellence for Sickle Cell Disease Research and Training (CESRTA) at the University of Abuja organized a media outreach and campaign to commemorate World Sickle Cell Day. The theme of this year’s celebration was “The Role of Stakeholders in the Management of Sickle Cell Disease.” This report highlights the activities conducted during the celebration and discusses some of the challenges and opportunities encountered.

Activities

Media Visits: Members of the CESRTA team visited various media outlets, including African Independent Television (AIT) Kakaaki The African Voice, Aso Radio and Television, Trust Television, Hot FM, and Classic FM. The team engaged in discussions, interviews, and panel sessions to disseminate information about the newborn screening program funded by the Consortium on Newborn Screening in Nigeria (CONSA), Sickle Cell Disease, its management, and the role of stakeholders.

Interview with Daily Trust Newspaper: A member of the CESRTA team was featured in an interview published by Daily Trust newspaper. The interview provided insights into the current state of Sickle Cell Disease management, the importance of newborn screening, and the need for government support in tackling the disease.

Awareness Campaign: The media campaign emphasized the significance of newborn screening for all infants. Team members highlighted the importance of early detection to ensure timely interventions and improve the quality of life for individuals living with SCD. The team also stressed the role of stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, policymakers, community leaders, and families, in the holistic management of the disease.
